Helix provided complete design and construction administration for two of Western State Hospital's Cottages.
The CSTC Camano cottage, built in mid 1980s, was in need of major interior improvements. The cottage’s primary interior design goal was to use materials, finishes, colors and furnishings to create a home-like environment and fixtures to prevent self-inflicted injuries.
Other design objectives included improved durability of interior finish surfaces; removal of existing hard-edged materials or surfaces; reconfiguration of the floor plan to improve staff supervision and control; and address programmatic function changes within the cottage. The renovation brought the cottage up to ADA compliance, and new mechanical and electrical systems, replacements or modifications were required in order to provide an acceptable level of comfort for current use.
Orcas Cottage, a residential building on the Child Study and Treatment Center (CSTC) Campus of Western State Hospital. The renovation included bedrooms; dayrooms; administration areas; heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; and electrical systems.
